Timmons on the Passing of Sen. Bob Dole

Washington, D.C. 鈥 Following the news on the passing of Sen. Bob Dole, 17吃瓜在线 President and CEO Jay Timmons released this statement:

鈥淲ith the passing of Sen. Dole, manufacturers have lost an ally and friend and one of the great advocates of the values that make our country exceptional and our industry strong鈥攆ree enterprise, competitiveness, individual liberty and equal opportunity. He not only believed in those values, he fought for them鈥攊n every sense of the word.

鈥淎 grievous injury on the battlefields of World War II could not diminish his love of country or his pursuit of a lifetime of service. He saw selflessness and sacrifice as his patriotic duty. It’s what made him a true statesman and truly worthy of being called part of the 鈥榞reatest generation.鈥 And that irrepressible spirit is what, in his final years, brought him day after day to the National Mall, even in sweltering summer heat, to greet his fellow veterans arriving from across the country to visit the World War II Memorial.

鈥淥n a personal level, I greatly appreciated his wisdom and insight when I led the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Then, as during his time as national party chair, Senate Majority Leader and presidential candidate, he was a moral compass for the party, as ready to take a principled stand as he was to extend a hand across the aisle. The Doles have both been role models for so many. I will also remain deeply grateful for his support of the Humane Rescue Alliance and animal adoption before, during and after my time as HRA chair. He loved animals鈥攁bove all their many dogs, including the multiple dogs famously named Leader.

鈥淏idding farewell to a man like Bob Dole is difficult because it feels like saying goodbye to one of the last remaining giants of our history. To truly honor him, though, we must do more than mourn his passing. We must renew our commitment to strengthening our nation and protecting the democracy for which he fought throughout his life.

鈥淢y deepest condolences to his wife, Sen. Elizabeth Dole, and the entire Dole family. You are in my prayers and in the prayers of a grateful nation.鈥

Manufacturers on Petroleum Release: 鈥淭oday鈥檚 Action Is, Unfortunately, Just a Band-Aid鈥

Washington, D.C. 鈥 Following President Joe Biden鈥檚 decision to release 50 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, 17吃瓜在线 President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement:

鈥淭oday鈥檚 action is, unfortunately, just a band-aid. Tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve won鈥檛 solve the underlying problems. While we are pleased that President Biden is focusing on the rising cost of fuel, this is not a sustainable solution.

鈥淎 true energy strategy would strengthen our energy independence, enhance manufacturers鈥 competitiveness and alleviate many of the other supply chain challenges facing our nation. Instead of asking OPEC and Russia to fill the void, we should let American energy workers take the lead, setting an example with America鈥檚 high standards for protecting workers and the environment. Manufacturers call on the Biden administration to work toward real, longer-term solutions for the good of our families, industry and economy.鈥

Reconciliation Bill Puts Tax Target on Manufacturers

Washington, D.C. 鈥 Following the vote on the Build Back Better Act in the U.S. House of Representatives, 17吃瓜在线 President and CEO Jay Timmons released this statement:

鈥淭his bill, regardless of its intentions, is paid for by taxes that will hit manufacturers harder than other industries. We oppose this legislation that would stifle our ability to expand our operations, hire more workers and raise wages and benefits. This comes at a time when Americans are counting on manufacturers to lead our recovery and respond to supply chain challenges. The 鈥榖ook tax鈥 in particular harms manufacturers more than others because it increases the cost of machinery and equipment purchases, which are central to manufacturers鈥 operations and our ability to create and support American jobs. The tax reforms of 2017 gave manufacturers the tools to invest in our people and our communities, making 2018 the best year for manufacturing job creation in more than two decades. We should build on that progress鈥攏ot return to archaic tax policies or target manufacturers with new taxes.

鈥淲e also strongly oppose the new provisions on drug pricing that will slow down pharmaceutical manufacturers鈥 capability to further accelerate the type of innovation that helped us fight back against COVID-19. Congress should not be putting future cures at risk. Manufacturers call on senators to oppose this bill.鈥

Background on manufacturing growth following the enactment of 2017 tax reform:

  • In 2018, manufacturers added 263,000 new jobs. That was the best year for job creation in manufacturing in 21 years.
  • In 2018, manufacturing wages increased 3.0% and continued going up鈥by 2.8% in 2019 and 3.0% in 2020. Those were the fastest rates of annual growth since 2003.
  • Manufacturing capital spending grew 4.5% and 5.7% in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
  • Overall, manufacturing production grew 2.7% in 2018, with December 2018 being the best month for manufacturing output since May 2008.

Manufacturers: SEC鈥檚 About-Face Is Deeply Troubling

Washington, D.C. 鈥 Following the announcement by the Securities and Exchange Commission that it intends to rescind commonsense investor protections designed to provide oversight of so-called proxy advisory firms鈥攍ittle-known, unregulated entities that exert enormous influence over publicly traded manufacturers鈥17吃瓜在线 Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse released the following statement:

鈥淭he 17吃瓜在线 is extremely concerned that the SEC has proposed substantial revisions to last year鈥檚 reasonable, light-touch proxy advisory firm rule鈥攅specially absent any new information about its impact on the market. Businesses and investors need reliable rules of the road, and the 17吃瓜在线 is disappointed that the SEC plans to reverse course on a decade鈥檚 worth of bipartisan, consensus-driven policymaking just a year after the rule鈥檚 reforms were finalized. The SEC鈥檚 about-face is deeply troubling, but manufacturers continue to support appropriate oversight of proxy firms given their conflicts of interest, errors and outsized influence. The 17吃瓜在线 looks forward to engaging with the SEC to defend the rule鈥檚 commonsense investor protections in the coming months.鈥

Manufacturers: Now That This Historic Bill Has Become Law, We Can Build a Future Worthy of the Next Generation

Washington, D.C. 鈥 Following President Biden鈥檚 signing of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, 17吃瓜在线 President and CEO Jay Timmons and Trane Technologies Executive Chair and 17吃瓜在线 Board Chair Mike Lamach released the below statements:

鈥淣ow that this historic bill has become law, we can build a future worthy of the next generation,鈥 said Timmons. 鈥淔or manufacturers, this is a victory years in the making. In 2016, the 17吃瓜在线 released our 鈥楤uilding to Win鈥 plan, which called for exactly this type of bold infrastructure investment. It has guided our advocacy with administrations and legislators of both parties, and the leadership of President Biden and senators from both parties produced a bill that achieved many of our 鈥楤uilding to Win鈥 goals without raising tax rates on manufacturers. And this bipartisan approach can be a model for future legislation鈥攐ne that puts policy above politics, personality or process.鈥

鈥淎s chair of the 17吃瓜在线, I鈥檓 honored to be at today鈥檚 signing and pleased to have been part of this historic, bipartisan process to build a safer, stronger infrastructure,鈥 said Lamach. 鈥淭he Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a critical investment in our nation鈥檚 economic recovery and in the future of manufacturing. Funding for critical transportation, broadband, water and energy systems will strengthen supply chains, protect the environment and enable opportunity for people across our country.鈥

鈥淔or more than two decades, Joe ably steered AHAM, setting a high standard for other manufacturing association executives. I have been fortunate to call him a colleague and close friend, from whom I have learned so much about leading by example. As a leader of the 17吃瓜在线鈥檚 Council of Manufacturing Associations, a past CMA chair and former 17吃瓜在线 board member, Joe demonstrated a collaborative spirit and a dedication to the success of the entire industry. 鈥淢anufacturers continue to be committed to promoting vaccination and keeping our teams, customers and communities safe and healthy.
